GARSTON GIRL ONE STEP AWAY FROM BECOMING MISS ENGLAND

A Garston student has made it through to the final 30 of this year’s Miss Hertfordshire after wowing judges with her looks and interviewing skills. Katrina Warnes, 20, of Eastlea Avenue, is currently in her first year at the University of Bristol studying Sociology, but managed to find the time to “randomly” enter the competition towards the end of last year.
Having sent her application off with a number of photos Katrina, or Kay as she prefers, received a few emails which she subsequently ignored, before a text was sent to her phone notifying her she had been selected among the 80 girls picked from the hundreds of applicants. Katrina told My Garston: “It was completely random entering the contest. “I found out about it on the internet and thought it would be fun I’m glad I entered.” After being selected amongst the 80 semi-finalists, Katrina attended the event at the Galleria in Hatfield where she had her photo taken and was interviewed by the judges. “We had to go along in a plain while t-shirt and have our photo taken against a background. We were then interviewed about charity stuff and then my University degree and my job.” Katrina was told she would be telephoned the following day if she had made the final, but had to wait, until 7.30pm before she was confirmed as being in the last 30. As well as studying, Katrina, who has lived in Garston for six years, works as a cocktail waitress in Bristol, a job she is finding quite difficult
at the moment due to her giving up alcohol for two months to raise money for the official Miss Hertfordshire charity, the Willow Foundation. Miss Hertfordshire contestants have raised around £12,000 in the last three years for the charity, which is a national charity dedicated to improving the quality of life of seriously ill young adults aged 16 to 40, through the provision of special days. “I thought this would be a good thing to do and I’ve already raised £150 after just five days. It’s quite hard though, especially when everyone at the end of my working shift sits down and has a drink and I have to settle for orange juice.” The self-confessed comic and-anime fan must now wait until May 11th before the final takes place at the Tewin Bury Farm Hotel in Welwyn, and will have her parents and boyfriend of six-and-a-half years there to support her. “The family have been very supportive and my boyfriend Mark even cut out an article in the local newspaper to keep in his wallet. My mates have been cool about it; it’s just all a bit surreal.” Katrina says that she will continue to raise as much money as possible between now and the final, and also admits that she would love to win the competition despite initially entering for a laugh. “Now that I’ve got this far I want to win. “I’m not usually very competitive but I’d love to win as you get a year’s modelling contract as well as a place in Miss England.” My Garston would like to wish Katrina the very best of luck and will bring you the result of her final in May.
